Ruby Gift Buddha

 APPRAISAL

ORIGIN:  The Ruby Buddha is an exquisite piece of unusual size, carved out of a natural non-treated  ruby
with an amalgamation of a light vein of sapphire running through the mineral.  The origin of the material was
discovered approximately ten years ago.  It is found in the Carhataga region, district of  Red Hills, at the location
of the old Mysore State in India.  This discovery has provided mainly small materials for bead work and

carvings.  However, a few large boulders were extracted from the location.  One of those large boulders was used
to carve this Buddha.

DIMENSIONS:  This solid ruby ”natural corundum” Buddha is a semi-translucent to opaque mottled red-purple
and grayish blue.  The seated Buddha measures 46.0 x 33x 18.5 centimeters.  The total weight in kilograms is 41.8 kg.
When converted to carats, it equals 206,500 cts.

The piece is supported by a GIA (Gemological Institute of America) certificate of authenticity (# 10823130)
with respect to the mineral.

REPLACEMENT VALUE:  Because of the rarity of such a large and unusual mineral, we came to our conclusion
after very extensive research. The estimated replacement value is $5,000,000.00 (five million dollars).

RESEARCH AND REFERENCES:  Our extremely detailed and through research led us to the major dealers in the
United States and European markets.  We contacted the Royal-Athena Gallery in New York (Mr. Izenberg), the
Barakat Gallery in Los Angeles (Mr. Fayez), the Aaron Gallery on Newbond Street in London, and the Gublin House in

Zurich.  They all gave us more-or-less the same response:  a piece of corundum of this magnitude and quality represents
an extremely rare and exquisite execution.  In addition to these references, we also contacted several museums across
the country including The Getty, LACMA, and The Met in New York.  All came to the same conclusion as the private
institutions mentioned above.  When then continued our research at various international auction houses including
Sotheby’s in London, Christies in Geneva, and Drouot in Paris.  The comparison pieces we came across were much
smaller than the magnificent piece at hand.  A mediocre Buddha carving with a very light polish measuring 13” x 7” was
sold about 6 months ago in London for $48,000 pounds.

An  even smaller version was sold in Paris at Drout in August 2002.  That one was carved from a good quality ruby block
with a light polish and it measured 8” x 5”.  It sold for $38,000 Euros.
